New strategies to combat beta-lactam resistant

Hyperproduction of AmpC beta-lactamases by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and many Enterobacteriaceae species, is a major cause of the clinical failure of broad-spectrum beta-lactam treatments. AmpC hyperproduction is closely related with the peptidoglycan recycling pathway. In this article, the scientists, including Dr. A. Oliver (REIPI), discuss on the structural and functional biology of potential drugs targets within the Gram-negative peptidoglycan recycling pathway and the utility of blocking this pathway by new-developed small molecules as a means of attenuating AmpC-mediated resistance in P. aeruginosa.
